SCHEDULE FOR NEXT SEMESTER:
seminar (basically, english)
comparitive politics
theories of photography
photography studio
intro to ceramics
painting studio

I had originally designed a more academic schedule but since I got a shitty registration number, I had slim pickings...
nevertheless, I'm happy with what I got. i'm actually overjoyed to have three studio art classes. i've been leaning more and more towards the arts and it's something that is going to keep me sane over the long winter months. i'll be spending all my time in the DAC (daniel arts center) which, despite its faults, is a building i enjoy- the only drawback is the walk to the DAC is entirely uphill.
as soon as i finish the work for this semester, my parents are going to buy me a camera- i chose the nikon FM10. it's a completely manual film camera. you're actually allowed to have automatic cameras in the class, as long as they're film cameras, but i figure, if i'm going to learn how to shoot film photos, i'm going to do it right- no cheating.
it's a close call, but i think i'm more excited about the photography class than the painting class. i've spent this entire semester watching most of my friends go out on picture-taking walks and modeling for them and spending hours in the darkroom, and i've been living on a beautiful campus where every other time i look around me i see something i wish i could photograph. i'll finally have a camera, and time in the darkroom, and i'll be getting credit for it. i'll probably come back to school with half a dozen rolls ready to develop, too- i want pictures of home and friends and family, so i can put them on my walls, and so i have film to mess around with as i'm learning how to process and develop.
art art art!! i'm planning on doing one or two portraits (painting) of my sister over break, and probably one of my friends, and maybe something else... a nude? abstract? landscape? still life? i don't know, i just want to stretch my painting wings before going up to school and starting an intensive studio class. i'll have a month to mess around before the next semester starts. it should be fun.
that's not to say i'm not looking forward to ceramics, either. it's been ages since i've worked with clay. i love the feel of it my hands.

Comments:
The Nikon F-series is the classic workhorse photojournalist camera and is built to be repairable and to function under warzone conditions. I've got an old FA and it's built like a brick!

Starting with a manual Nikon is an absolutely great choice. It can last a lifetime and it is one of the world standards (along with Leica) that can be repaired anywhere in the world, and one can get Nikon-compatible lenses everywhere forever.

Life is about choices, both functional and aesthetic. You nailed this one good by approaching it with thoughtfulness.
